Carshalton is a suburb in Sutton in Greater London, about 10 miles south of Trafalgar Square and central London. Hackbridge lies just to the north of Carshalton and had the first Country dogs home opened by the Duke and Duchess of Portland.
The area around Carshalton has been occupied since Neolithic and Iron Age times. In the Doomsday Book, the village here is called Aultone, and the area as known for it's springs. One of these feeds the River Wandle today. The area was used for farming, had a reputation for good trout fishing in the 17C and then slowly became developed and incorporated into Greater London.
