Bakewell - FURTHER INFORMATION

Bakewell - Bakewell visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Bakewell' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Derbyshire.

Bakewell is an important tourist attraction and market town in the Peak District in Derbyshire, England. It is recorded in the Doomsday book as 'Badequella'. The town was founded by the Romans at a fordable spot on the River Wye and later fortified by the Saxons. Among other things Bakewell is the origins of the Bakewell Tart (3 shops in the town vie for status of selling 'Original Bakewell Pudding').

Bakewell had a number of wells from which iron-rich water wells up at around 15°C. Two of these wells still survive, Bath-well in Bath Street and Holywell (Pete Well) in the recreation ground. The bridge over the Wye dates from the 13C and fragments of the old All Saints church date from the 10C. Aside from this, much of the town dates from the 19C, including the Rutland Arms pub built in 1804 where Jane Austen stayed in 1811. It was at this pub that the chef made a mistake in 1859, creating the Bakewell Pudding (or Tart) in the process. Nearby are Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, both popular tourist attractions.

Bakewell also markets itself as a gateway to the Peak District and the home of the Peak District National Park Authority is here. The tourist information center in the town provides information all about the Peak District, the walks, camp grounds and Bed & Breakfast accommodation in the surrounding area. A popular spot within the town is the relatively new Bath Gardens.
