Sendlinger Tor is one of four ancient gates of Munich, built 1318 by Ludwig the Bavarian as part of the second ring of defences around the rapidly expanding city. Sendlinger Tor is flanked on either side by Medieval towers and used to have three arches. These were replaced by a single arch in 1906. The gate underwent extensive restoration between 1972 and 1982, and is now a popular landmark and tourist attraction within the city.
