San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane Church - Further Information

The church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (Church of Saint Charles at the Four Fountains) stands next to the Quattro Fontane (Four Fountains) at the junction between via delle Quattro Fontane and via del Quirinale in Rome. The church is also sometimes called 'Chiesa di San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane', or, simply, 'San Carlino'. It was built between 1638-1641 and designed by designed by the Francesco Borromini. It is one of three churches dedicated to Carlo in Rome San Carlo ai Catinari and San Carlo al Corso.

The interior of the church is quite complex, an oval central form with 4 half-oval enclaves around it. Altars occupy 3 of the four enclaves, the other contains the main entrance. Between each enclave are four Corinthian columns and the whole gives the church a pleasant undulating appearance. The main altarpiece, by Pierre Mignard, depicts Sts Charles Borromeus John of Matha and Felix of Valois. The left hand chapel contains the mummified body of a Roman soldier martyr and the 'Flight to Egypt', a painting by Giovanni Francesco Romanelli. Most visitors come to see the dome of the church, decorated in geometric forms.

Nearby to the east are the churches of Santa Susanna, Santa Maria della Vittoria and San Bernardo alle Terme. To the west is the Palazzo and Piazza del Quirinale and Sant Andrea al Quirinale Church.
