San Nicola in Carcere Basilica stands just west of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in Rome. It is dedicated to Nicolas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors. It is thought that the earliest church on this site dates from the 6th Century. The first known dedication of the building was in 1128, mentioned on a plaque on the church.
San Nicola in Carcere was built reusing material from two temples in the Forum Olitorium. The current church dates from 1599 and it was restored in the 19C. Inside the church, beneath the altar, is an antique basalt bath containing the relics of martyrs. Two Madonna cults are represented within the church, 'Our Lady of Pompeii' and the Mexican 'Our Lady of Guadalupe'.
One of the columns near the entrance is fluted and contains a 10C inscription. In the crypt are the remains from the Temple of Juno Sospita, which is one of the very few temples in existence from the Republican era of Rome.
