Poole lies close to Bournemouth and Dorchester is just 20 miles to the east. The town grew up around one of the largest natural harbours on earth, and has a long tradition with sailing and fishing. The importance of Poole as a trading port grew rapidly after the Norman conquest and in 1433 it was awarded Staple port status by King Henry VI, enabling the port to begin exporting wool. Links with the sea are still important, Poole is the location of both the RNLI headquarters and Sunseeker pleasure yacht factory.
Today, Poole mostly depends on the tourism trade, and many of the old warehouse buildings have been converted into luxury flats and hotels. Poole is surrounded by award winning beaches and nearby, around Sandbanks is some of the most expensive real estate on earth.
