Es Mercadal is a small village on Menorca about half way between Mahon and Ciutadella. The town lies at the foot of the highest hill on Menorca, the 352m Monte Toro. Es Mercadal is probably named after the market that has been held here since the 14C.
Es Mercadal is well known locally for local almond biscuits and for abarcas, a local sandal that is worn all over the island. This picture shows Sa Plaça, the main square. The High Street, Carrer Nou, leads off from here, lined with shops and restaurants. On this street is also Es Mercadal Hotel.
It is a 3.4km walk to the top of Monte Toro. At the top is a shrine to Virgin Monte Toro. Legend has it that a bull opened a path by shattering rocks on the mountain and then led villagers to an image of the Virgin.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
