Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome is named after Santa Maria in Trastevere church. This is a quiet square with a central fountain surrounded by cafes and restaurants. This area is a little out of central Rome and away from the bulk of the tourists. The octagonal fountain in the square appears on a 1472 map of Rome. It was restored in 1702 by Carlo Fontana while he was working on the church.

Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere is the main square in Trastevere and plays an important role in the social life of this rione. The area around the square is made of windy, narrow streets, which had no pavement until the 1400's. Trastevere has always been a multicultural district of Rome and the residents, known as Trasteverini, developed a local culture distinct from the rest of imperial Rome the other side of the Tiber.
