Tonbridge is a traditional market town in Kent, about 4 miles north of Royal Tunbridge Wells on the River Medway. The town is recorded in the Doomsday book of 1087 as 'Tonebridge'. One of the most popular landmarks in the town is Tonbridge Castle which has existed here in one form or another since the 11C. This motte and bailey castle is reported to be one if the finest in England. A regular market has been held in Tonbridge since 1259. This used to be held in the High Street but moved to the current site in Bank Street in 1856. Today there are 3 markets in Tonbridge.
Those visiting Tonbridge will be greeted by various old, timber frame buildings and houses from the 1700's. Aside from the Castle, Tonbridge has an ancient church and a famous public school. During the summer months it is possible to hire boats to row on the River Medaway, and the local fishing club has angling rights to parts of the river. Other nearby attractions include Haysden Country Park, and in the summer the Brittannia's Jolly Boat ferries people between the castle and the park.
