The Tiber River (Tiberis, Tevere) is the third longest river in Italy and flows through the center of Rome on its route from the Apennine mountains to the Tyrrhenian Sea. One legend says that Tiberinus Silvius, or Thebris, ninth king of Alba Longa, drowned in the Albula River, which was then renamed in his memory. It is then said that the god Jupiter made him both a god and guardian spirit of the river. This is the reason why the Tiber was depicted by the Romans as the god Tiberinus with water flowing from his beard and hair. The Tiber is also the river into which Romulus and Remus, the twin founders of Rome, were thrown as infants.

The river has always played an important role in the development of the region, with ships trading up to 100km upstream from Rome as early as the 5C BC. Today the river is unnavigable much beyond Rome due to silting. In Rome the river was lined with high stone embankments in 1876 to protect the city from repeated flooding. Some of the important bridges in Rome across the Tiber include Ponte San Angelo, a pedestrian bridge leading to Castel Sant Angelo V, Ponte Umberto, Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II which is the main gateway to the Vatican and St Peter's and Ponte Palatino (Ponte Rotto) next to the Isola Tiberina (Tiber Island).
