The church of Saints Luca and Martina lies on the border of the Roman Forum (Forum Romanum), and the forums of Augustus and Caesar. It is also known as the Church of the Three Forums, and the original building was one of the oldest churches in Rome. The current building dates from the early Baroque period, at the start of 'High Baroque' architecture, and inside are partially convex/concave facade and walls, ornamentation, and the use of columns and pillars. This is an early example of things to come seen in other churches in Rome. The facade of the church was redesigned by Pietro da Cortona between 1634-1650.
The original church was built in 625 and dedicated to Martina, who was martyred in 228 under the reign of Alexander Severus.
Just outside SS. Luca and Martina is a fantastic view of the Arch of Septimius Severus and Roman Forum which overlooks the Curia Julia and Colonna di Foca as well as the Julia Basilica (Basilica Giulia). Because of it's location, this is one of the most photographed churches in Rome. Next to it are the Mamertine Prison and Tullianum.
