Parliament Square in London is probably one of the most visited squares int the city. Some of the most popular tourist attractions and best known landmarks in London are either on, or close to, this square. To the east are the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament), Big Ben and Portcullis House. From here Westminster Bridge leads to the London Eye, London Aquarium and the South Bank. To the south are Victoria Tower Gardens, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's. West of the square are Westminster Central Hall and St James Park. Whitehall runs north towards Trafalgar Square and the West End theatre district.
Parliament Square was created in 1868 to improve traffic flow and create an open space. It has often been the site of public protest and has been the site of a continuous anti-Iraq War demonstration since 2001. The square contains statues of various notable people. Winston Churchill stands on the north corner of Parliament Square. Other satues include Abraham Lincoln (in front of Middlesex Guildhall), Robert Peel (South-Western edge of the green), Lord Palmerston (North-Western edge of the green), Jan Christian Smuts (Northern edge of the green), Derby, Disraeli and George Canning.
