The Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat rests on a ledge of the Montserrat mountains, nearly 4000ft above sea-level in Catalonia, a short distance north of Barcelona. Known fully as the 'Monastery of Santa María de Montserrat', it was established in the 11th century. It is now one of the most important pilgrimage sites and attractions in the whole of Spain, attracting around 2.5 million visitors annually to see La Moreneta, the "little black one", a small 12C black statue of Mary in the Sanctuary of the Virgin inside a grand 16C Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat.

By Train: Take a train from Plaça d'Espanya in Barcelona followed by the Aeri de Montserrat Cable Car or Cremallera Funicular from Monistrol do Montserrat.
By Car: A2 north from Barcelona past El Bruc and then an 11km road round the mountains to the abbey. Alternatively take the C-55 west at Albera to Monistrol and a road up the mountain.
