Top of Montserrat Funicular - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama taken form the top of one of the funiculars on Montserrat. The views from the top and walking back down to the monastery are fantastic.
Top of Montserrat Funicular - FURTHER INFORMATION
Top of Montserrat Funicular - Montserrat visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Top of Montserrat Funicular' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Catalonia.
Two funiculars run on Montserrat linking the Placa de Santa Maria next to the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat to various parts of the mountain. This is the Funicular de Sant Joan which ascends 248m from the abbey to the top from where visitors are awarded with stunning panoramic views across parts of Catalonia in Spain to Barcelona. On a clear, still day it is even possible to see Mallorca and Ibiza in the Mediterranean. The highest point on Montserrat is the Turo de San Jeronimo, also called Mirador and La Miranda (1,236 m). From here it is possible to either take the funicular back down to the Abbey or to walk down the mountainside.
Serveral Hermitage Trails link the remains of 7 hermitages together and with the abbey. On one there is a good viewpoint with a cross with views back over to the abbey and the jagged mountains behind. Walking on Montserrat and the surrounding mountains is popular year round as Montserrat can be visited as a day trip from Barcelona. For those wishing to stay locally, Monistrol and surrounding village have a large number of (cheap) bed and breakfast, hotels, camp grounds and hostels normally used by students and pilgrims.
