Montserrat lies at the heart of the Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat (Natural Park of Mount Montserrat) in Catalonia, Spain. The region is popular for climbing and walking, and the mountains of this massif are crossed with numerous walking trails. The highest point of Montserrat is the Turo de San Jeronimo, also called Mirador and La Miranda (1,236 m), and on a clear day it is sometimes possible to see the islands of Mallorca and Ibiza in the distance.
About 2.5 million people visit the park each year, many to see the Black Virgin statue in Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat, one of the most important religious sites in Spain. In the mountains the paths (Hermitage Trails) link 7 hermitages with the main monastery. On one is a good viewpoint with a cross looking back at the monastery.
Montserrat makes a good a day trip from Barcelona. For those wishing to stay locally, Monistrol and surrounding village have a large number of bed and breakfast places, hotels, camp grounds and hostels.
For climbers, the massif can be divided into 12 ranges. The walls and pinicles are typically 50-300m high and climbing can be found for all levels of expertise. The 12 ranges are Agulles, Camping, Can Jorba, Ecos, Frares, Gorros, San Jeroni, Sant Benet, Serrat de les Garrigores, Serrat dels Monjos, Vermell and Vinja Nova.
