Montserrat mountain in Catalonia has one of the most famous religious sites in the whole of Spain. In the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat is a black virgin statue of Mary, visited by tens of thousands of pilgrims each year. There are 7 hermitages linked by walking paths, the Hermitage Trails, to the abbey within Mount Montserrat Natural Park (Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat), and the area is also popular for walking and climbing. Several funiculars run from Montserrat abbey to various starting points for the walks, and one of the most popular is a 1.5 hour descent back down to the abbey, passing the viewpoint over the region shown in this panorama picture.
Montserrat can be visited as a day trip from Barcelona. For those wishing to stay locally, Monistrol and surrounding village have a large number of (cheap) bed and breakfast, hotels, camp grounds and hostels normally used by students and pilgrims.
