Monistrol de Montserrat is a small town next to the Llobregat river at the base of the Montserrat mountains. It is a gateway to the Parc Natural de la Montanya de Montserrat (Natural Park of Mount Montserrat) and is full of hotels, hostels, bed and breakfast and other accommodation for visitors.
An estimated 2.5 million people visit the park each year, either to see the famous monastery of Monterrat and the in the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat, or to go walking and climbing in the mountains. The Cremallera Funicular takes visitors from the station to the monastery. An alternative ascent is via the Aeri de Montserrat cable car which leaves from the station before Monistrol de Montserrat. The line continues north from here towards Manresa.
