Merstham village lies within the London commuter belt in Surrey on the edge of the North Downs and North Downs Way. The village is a little north of Reigate and was, in Saxon times, part of the Reigate Hundred. It is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 as 'Merstan'. The area was marshland, but important for its green sandstone quarries as far back as Roman times and remained important up to the end of the 19C and Quarry Dean in Merstham became the terminus of the Croydon, Merstham and Godstone Railway in the early 1800's, the first public railway on earth. Part of the track can still be seen today in Quality Street.
After WWII a large housing estate was built at the eastern edge of the village and the M25 runs over some of the old quarry sites near to the village. Most of these are now filled in, but a couple are open to the local caving groups. One of the old quarry pits has been converted into Mercer's Lake, a recreational area within Mercer Country Park and home to the Aqua Sports Company. The oldest church in the village is St Katherine's Church, which dates back to the 12C.
Merstham holds an annual Quality Street Fair in Quality street. This is a successor to a much larger fair held here from 1339, when King Edward III granted the Charter of Merstham Fair, until the advent of WWII in 1339. The old fair ran on well into the night.
