Carshalton is now a suburb in Sutton in Greater London, about 10 miles south of Trafalgar Square and central London. The main hotel in Carsholton is the Greyhound Hotel. Carshalton has been occupied since Neolithic and Iron Age times, and is referred to as 'Aultone' in the 1086 Doomsday Book. It was later known as 'Creshalton' and has been called Carlshalton for the last 200 years. The area around Carshalton has been transformed in recent times as demand for housing near to London has grown. Parts of the old village can still be found, but much of Carshalton has been developed as it became part of the London commuter belt with rapid, direct rail access to London Victoria and Blackfriars stations within about 30 minutes.

One of the highlights of Carshalton are the Carshalton Ponds, which provide a relaxing open space in the center of the village next to . On the edge of one of the ponds is Strawberry Lodge, built in 1685 for Josias Dewey, a gunpowder maker who operated water mills on the River Wandle, which flows north from here through Hackbridge on the way to the River Thames. On the southern edge of the Carshalton Ponds are the Greyhound Hotel, which dates from around 1700, and All Saints church, parts of which date back to the 12th century. Around the high street are various streets lined with Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the high street itself is lined with shops and restaurants.
