Mount Gambier lies about half way between Adelaide and Melbourne near the coast of South Australia. The town is built on the slopes of Mount Gambier volcano, and is about 27km from the sea. Mount Gambier volcano named after Lord Gambier R.N by Lieutenant James Grant who sighted it from HMS Lady Neson in December 1800. It is a maar volcano and has several crater lakes, which have become tourist attractions.

Many of the tourist attractions in and around Mount Gambier are of geological origin. Top attractions include:- Blue Lake - foremost tourist attraction in the area, with bright blue water in the summer, with guided tours provided by Aquifer Tour.
- Other Volcanic lakes - include Valley Lake, Leg of Mutton Lake, and Browne's Lake.
- Umpherston Sinkhole - massive sinkhole containing a garden.
- Cave Gardens - sinkhole next to the town hall.
- Ewens Ponds - underwater garden teeming with aquatic life and leafy green plants open for snorkelling.
- Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park - contains Tantanoola Cave, a single large dolomite cavern filled with a spectacular array of formations considered to be one of the most beautiful caves in Australia.
- Engelbrecht Cave - Limestome cave with viewing platform popular with cave divers.
- Glencoe Woolshed - built in 1863 now a working museum about the Pioneer Pastoralists.
- Haig Vineyard - vineyard just north of Blue Lake growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
- Coonawarra Wineries - collection of 25 Coonawarra and the Limestone Coast wineries found near to Mount Gambier.
- HMS Lady Nelson Visitor & Discover Centre - historical center with a full scale replica of the HMS Lady Nelson which charted the waters around Mount Gambier in 1800.

Road: Mount Gambier is 450km east of Adelaide on the A1 / B1. It is 195km west of Warrnambool and 450km west of Melbourne.
