Stow House stands in Los Carneros County Park, near the western side of Lake Los Carneros in Goleta. It dates from the late 19th Century. In 1871 William Whitney Stow purchased 1,043 acres of the surrounding land for his son Sherman P. Stow. Sherman built a Gothic Revival style house here and moved into it with his bride in 1873. in 1875 the Stows planted 3,000 lemon trees on the land, the first commercial lemon planting in California.
The house was extended and expanded during the 1880s and 1910. Today it is a museum registered on the National Register of Buildings. It is open to the public and contains family photographs, furniture, and stories of Sherman Stow and his family. Next to Stow House is the Goleta History Museum, or Sexton House, which now contains a blacksmith shop, carriage house and maritime museum. Nearby is the South Coast Railroad Museum and Stowe Grove.
