The Lanes are a popular shopping and eating district in Brighton close to Brighton Pier and the Royal Pavilion. The layout of these narrow streets were part of the original town of Brighthelmston, which is mentioned in the 1086 Doomsday Book. The earliest maps of Brighton show a small village made of four roads, named North, South, East and West Street. The Lanes were a network of narrow paths between them among the buildings. Middle Street in the Lanes was built around 1500. By the late 1700's the Lanes were developed to what is there today.
Today, the Lanes contains various art galleries, boutiques shops and restaurants. Visting the Lanes is one of the tourist attractions of Brighton, and on busy days thousands of people can be seen meandering in and out of the shops. Among the art galleries here are the Window Gallery and Ambience Gallery.
