Brighton Beach and West Pier - FURTHER INFORMATION
Brighton Beach and West Pier - Brighton visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Brighton Beach and West Pier' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from East Sussex.
The West Pier was built in 1866 and at that time was the second pier in Brighton. Piers were popular in Victorian times but by 1975 West Pier was deliberately cut off from the shore for safety reasons. Regular tours were still offered round the pier by the West Pier Trust until a storm in 2002 caused partial collapse of the walkway leading to the Concert Hall. This was the first of a series of disasters for on January 20, 2003 more of the pier collapsed destroying the concert hall and in March and May a series of fires caused further destruction. Finally the middle part of the pier was destroyed by high winds.
In spite of all these problems the West Pier Trust still have plans to redevelop the site. This has been opposed by some other local traders, including the owners of the neighbouring Palace Pier. These development plans include the construction of the i360 viewing platform 150 above sea level.
