Bridge over Merri River - FURTHER INFORMATION
Bridge over Merri River - Warrnambool visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Bridge over Merri River' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Victoria.
The Merri River flows 60km from the hills around Woolsthorpe down to Warrnambool in Victoria, south Australia. It enters the sea at Stingray Bay, next to the Warrnambool Breakwater Pier. The river is popular for brown trout fishing along much of it's length. It is often split into two sections separated by the Bromfield St Weir. Tributaries include Drysdale Creek and Spring Creek. Below the Weir the river is tidal and there boats can be launched upstream of the highway bridge at Dennington. The lower reaches of the river yield some of the best brown trout in southern Vistoria.
Within Stingray Bay is Middle Island which can be waded out to at low tide and is home to a small fairy penguin colony. Stingray Bay is a popular place for swimming and is exposed at low tides. The bridge shown here leads to the beginning of the Mahogany Walking Track which follows the coastline for 22km to Port Fairy.
