This picture was taken late in the afternoon and the sun is low over the ocean on a cloudless day.Split Point Lighthouse - Further InformationSplit Point Lighthouse stands on a headland in Aireys Inlet at the eastern end of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, southern Australia. Built in 1891, it was originally called the 'Eagles Nest Point Lighthouse' but the name was changed to Split Point in 1913. It is also sometimes called 'White Queen' or 'White Lady', and is the fist lighthouse sighted by ships rounding the Cape Otway on their way to Melbourne.Split Point Lighthouse is 34m high and its light can be seen about 37km out to sea. It was first powered by vaporised kerosene, then converted to an automatic acetylene operation in 1919. At this point the lighthouse ceased to be staffed and in 1972 it was connected to mains electricity. It stands in a public reserve overlooking Eagle Rock and tours up the lighthouse are run by Split Point Lighthouse Tours. One of the old lighthouse buildings has been converted into a shop sell souvenirs. The old lighthouse buildings have been converted into rentable holiday cottages, run by Glen Farm Cottage Holidays. Travel Directions and Getting There: Aireys Inlet is about 120 km west of [[2129,Melbourne]] at the eastern end of the B100 (Great Ocean Road). From the B100 turn onto Inlet Crescent, then left onto Lighthouse Road and right onto Federal Street. Parking is available at the end. Comments and Reviews.
