Painkalac Creek is a small creek that separates Aireys Inlet from the neighbouring town of Fairhaven. At the mouth of the creek is a sand bank that forms a dam. The water levels of the creek are rarely high enough to flow over this barrier and a tidal brine lake forms behind it. Around the creek is a sandy beach and some of the lake bed becomes exposed at low tide.
To the left of Painkalac Creek as it enters the sea is a public reserve on which stands the Split Point Lighthouse, the main tourist attraction of the town. Just offshore is Eagle Rock, a limestone sea stack on top of a basalt volcano column and the focal point of the Eagle Rock Marine Reserve, and a popular snorkeling and dive site.
