Split Point Lighthouse can be seen on the cliff top.Aireys Inlet Coastline - Further InformationAireys Inlet is a small town on the eastern end of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, southern Australia. It is popular with surfers who stay here while surfing on nearby Farihaven beach. Aireys Inlet is separated from Farihaven by Painkalac Creek. The coastline here has several small beaches interspersed between rocky shelves. These are Sandy Gully, Steppy Beach and Sunnymeade beach and it is possible to walk between them at low tide.Aside from the nearby surfing, the main tourist attraction of Aireys Inlet is the Split Point Lighthouse, which stands in a public reserve overlooking Eagle Rock (a popular dive site). The lighthouse was built in 1891 and is the first lighthouse sighted by ships rounding the Cape Otway on their way to Melbourne. Aireys Inlet is named after J.M.C. Airey who settled here in 1842. The town was devastated by a bush fire in Ash Wednesday in 1983, but has since been rebuilt. It was the filming location for much of the children's television series Round the Twist. Today it is popular destination for those wishing to stay close to the main attractions of the Great Ocean Road and for surfing and diving.
