Wirrulla is a small town in the grain belt of the western side of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, about 60 km from Streaky Bay. The most notable feature of Wirrulla is the massive grain silos used to store grain harvested from the surrounding area and the associated railhead. With a population of about 60, Wirrulla has a hotel, a caravan park and a general store and one pub.
Wirrulla - Attractions
- Inland Jetty - probably one of the few inland jetties on earth, where the tide is always out.
- Gawler Ranges - Wirrulla is ideally placed as a base from which to explore the Gawler Ranges wilderness area, full of massive, multicoloured volcanic domes, white salt flats and home to the Sturt's desert pea, the floral emblem of South Australia.
- Haslam Beach - just 35km from Wirrulla on Streaky Bay for swimming, fishing and crabbing.
- Koolgera Conservation Reserve - 47,000 hectares of protected reserve near to Koolgera, about 20 miles from Wirrulla.
- Nunnyah Conservation Reserve - 22,000 hectares of protected reserve near Nunjikompita, about 22 miles from Wirrulla.
- Lake Gairdner National Park - popular with bird-watchers and botanists after the spring rains, home to the Kokatha peoples.
