Inverness Castle is a red, sandstone building on a cliff with a dominant position over the River Ness near the center of Inverness in Scotland. The first castle was built here in 1057 by Máel Coluim III of Scotland. It was sacked by King Robert I of Scotland. Other castles came and went during the centuries as Inverness was a very strategic position in the border between the Scottish Highlands and the Lowlands.
The current castle dates from 1836, built by William Burn. Today it houses the Inverness Sheriff Court. It is a popular tourist attraction, with people coming to see the commanding views over the city. In front of the castle is a statue of Flora MacDonald.
