Waverley Railway Station is the main station in Edinburgh, with regional lines running throughout Scotland as well as down to London and other parts of England. The full name of the station is Edinburgh Waverley railway station, but locals refer to it simply as 'Waverley'.
Waverley is the terminus of both the East Coast Main Line and West Coast Main Line. It has 21 platforms and is the second busiest station in Scotland after Glasgow Central. It rests in a valley between the Old Town and New Town of Edinburgh, below Edinburgh Castle and next to it are the Tourist Information Centre, The Balmoral hotel and a shopping mall. This area was once filled with Nor Loch.
Waverley Railway Station is the arrival point for a large number of visitors to Edinburgh each year. It opens onto Princess Street, which is lined with shops, restaurants and hotels. From here buses depart to all parts of Edinburgh and a tram linking the station to Edinburgh Airport and Ocean Terminal is due to open in 2011.
