Great Synagogue (Dohány Zsinagóga) - Inside - FURTHER INFORMATION
Great Synagogue (Dohány Zsinagóga) - Inside - Budapest visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Great Synagogue (Dohány Zsinagóga) - Inside' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Central Hungary.
The Great Synagogue (Dohány Synagogue, Dohány utcai Zsinagóga) of Budapest is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world. Tourists should be aware that photography inside is not permitted.
The inside of the synagogue is beautifully decorated. The building is designed like a basilica with both Byzantine and Moorish elements. It also contains an organ, which is very unusual for a synagogue. The ark inside the Great Synagogue contains 25 torah scrolls taken from other synagogues destroyed during the Holocaust.
Entrance to the Synagogue complex is ticketed, and covers the inside of the Great Synagogue itself as well as access to the National Jewish Museum (Orszagos Zsido Vallasi es Torteneti Gyujtemeny). Behind the Great Synagogue is a courtyard with memorials to the Jews killed during WWII.
The Great Synagogue is a short walk from the National Museum of Budapest.
