Edinburgh Castle - Military Prison - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama showing the inside of the Military Prison in Edinburgh Castle. It is quite small, whitewashed with black, iron staircase linking the two levels. A place of solitary confinement and hard labor.

Edinburgh Castle's Military Prison was built 1842 in the Middle Ward of the castle to hold soldiers of the castle garrison. It was extended in the 1880's, at the same time as the Argyle Tower was built, and last used in 1923 when the garrison moved to Redford Barracks. Within the prison today are exhibits showing the crimes of some of the previous occupants and the punishments they faced. Opposite the prison is the exit to the Prisons of War exhibition.
