From it a series of 5 cannon face north over Edinburgh. The Forewall was built during renovations and improvements carried out in the castle between 1689 and 1695, linking the Half Moon Battery to the right with Portcullis Tower (now the Argyle Tower). It incorporates parts of the original 16th century castle wall. Today spaces between the cannon are used for parking. To the left of the Forewall Battery are Mons Meg and St Margaret's Chapel, both on top of a small rise. Lang Stairs which descend from next to the battery past Argyle Tower and the Dog Cemetery, link the Upper Ward with the Middle Ward of the castle and coming out next to the Portcullis Gate near to the Argyle Battery. This is one of two ways to get to the Middle Ward, the other being through Foog's Gate to the right of the Scottish National War Memorial building.
