St George's West Church - FURTHER INFORMATION
St George's West Church - Edinburgh visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'St George's West Church' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Lothian.
St George's West Church was built to provide Edinburgh with another church as the New Town expanded in the 19th century. Construction of the church started in 1811 and finished in 1814. It was funded by the Council, who, in those times, took upon itself the responsibility for the spirituality of the city. At that time Charlotte Square was only partially built and the area west of the church was open fields.
As well as being an active church, St George's West is sometimes used for performances and concerts. Part of the church is now given over to the Olive Tree Café, which is popular with both locals and visitors using local produce in the food it serves. The café is open Monday to Saturday and can seat up to 100 people. The church also sponsors Creative Space.
