Banyalbufar (Bañalbufar in Spanish) is a small village on the western part of the Tramuntana mountains in Mallorca. It lies between Esporles and Estellencs on a very windy road, close to Es Port des Canonge. Below the village is a tiny cove, Cala Banyalbufar. The town was established by the Moors in the 10th century before being captured by the Catalans in 1229. It has a rich history in agriculture and at one time the 2000 steppes and terraces around the village were mostly dedicated to growing grapes for wine and other fruit. Fishing was a secondary industry.
Today, this traditional village makes an ideal base from which to explore rural Mallorca. The old buildings are overlooked by the mountains with spectacular views over the coastline. There are 3 hotels in the village (Sa Baronia, Sa Coma and Mar i Vent) and one guest house (Ca'n Busquets) which cater for visitors.
The area around Banyalbufar is popular for walking and cycling. A popular trail leads from road just to the east of the village, near the point this picture was taken, to Port des Canonge through shaded pine forests. Also nearby is the Mirador de ses Animes viewpoint offering stunning views along the coast. Locals built the Torre Verger (Verger Tower) to protect from Moorish pirates. It is now a popular tourist attraction. Local beaches include Cala Banyalbufar, with a refreshing waterfall and good snorkeling, as well as Es Corral Fals, Son Bunyola and other beaches at Cala Estellencs and Es Port des Canonge.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
