Westerham is an ancient village south of London mentioned in the Doomsday Book as 'Ouistreham'. It lies on the River Darent on the borders of Kent and Surrey and has been occupied since before Roman times. The remains of a Roman encampment can be found next to the Tower ruins on Tower Hill.
A pretty rural village with several old buildings, Westerham is popular with visitors and near to several notable attractions. Within the village itself it is worth visiting St. Mary's Church. The village has close associations with Winston Churchill, there is a statue of him in the Green and Chartwell, the home of Winston Churchill, is nearby.
Also nearby are several other stately homes and castles, open to the public as tourist attractions. Among them are Quebec House, Squerryes Court, Downe House - home to Charles Darwin, and Hever Castle.
Westeram is surrounded by the smaller villages of Brastead, Sundridge and Ide Hill, which all have some interesting old buildings.
