Stirling Castle - Outer Close - FURTHER INFORMATION
Stirling Castle - Outer Close - Stirling visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Stirling Castle - Outer Close' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Stirlingshire.
The Outer Close of Stirling Castle is accessed by a gate through the Forework on the southern side. To the west is the Royal Palace and to the north the Great Hall. Between the two is an entrance to the Inner Close. Next to the great hall was the Great Kitchen, which has been reconstructed for visitors. At one time it is thought that the Hall and Kitchen may have been linked. The eastern side is made up of a battery of cannon facing out over Stirling.
In the southeast corner of the Outer Close is the Three Gun Battery, on the top of Elphinstone Tower. A path leads north from the Outer Close to the Nether Bailey through the North Gate, thought to be the oldest existent part of the castle, dating from the 1380s.
