Stirling Castle - Nether Bailey - FURTHER INFORMATION
Stirling Castle - Nether Bailey - Stirling visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Stirling Castle - Nether Bailey' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Stirlingshire.
The Nether Bailey is the defensive structure built on the lower parts of Castle Hill to the north of Stirling Castle. It is not one of the most visited parts of the castle, but the open area and grassy hill make a fantastic escape from the crowds. The Nether Bailey is surrounded by walls from which there are stunning views over Stirling and the surrounding countryside.
The Nether Bailey is accessed from the Outer Close through the North Gate, probably the oldest part of the castle. Near to the North Gate is the Guard House, which became the castle prison. There are four powder magazines that line part of area behind strong stone walls. Three of these date from 1810 and the last from 1860. The fourth is open to the public. North of these is the Tapestry Studio, in which weavers are creating tapestries for the Royal Palace. Finished tapestries currently hang in Chapel Royal.
The wall to the south encloses part of the Douglas Garden. Beyond this rises the Chapel Royal and limewashed exterior of the Great Hall.
