Stirling Old Harbour - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama taken from the site of Stirling Harbour on the banks of the River Forth. This picture was taken late in the afternoon. There is little to be seen of the harbour itself today, but the view over the river in this small park is quite relaxing.
Stirling Old Harbour - FURTHER INFORMATION
Stirling Old Harbour - Stirling visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Stirling Old Harbour' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Stirlingshire.
Stirling was once a major port in Scotland, at the end of the tidal section of the River Forth. In 1525 Stirling Harbour was important enough to be listed along with Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh Perth and St Andrews. Shallow rocky outcrops in the River Forth prevented newer, larger ships from being able to access Stirling harbour and the port's importance declined, though smaller vessels used the harbour until the outbreak of WWII.
The importance of the harbour was enhanced by the presence of Stirling Bridge, the lowest crossing on the river for hundreds of years, and protected by Stirling Castle.
Today Stirling Old Harbour has been refurbished as a small park. Though not high on the Stirling attraction list, it makes for a pleasant break on the walk to Cambuskenneth Abbey ruins.
