The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum opened in 1874 using a bequest from artist Thomas Stuart Smith (1815-1869), his own private collections and land from the Burgh of Stirling. The museum and gallery has grown over time and today also contains a cafe, botanic gardens and reading rooms.

The Museum contains many unique and rare artifacts both from Scotland but also from the rest of the UK and other parts of the world. Highlights within the museum include:

• Stirling in the time of the Stuarts (c 1660)
• portrait of the composer and violinist Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713)
• The Pipe of Freedom by Thomas Stuart Smith
• Stirling Jug from 1457
• Headsman's Cloak and Axe form 1820
• A football from 1540 made of a pigs bladder
• the oldest curling stone in the world from 1511
• Prototype model Engine c 1800-1810 - one of three in the world
• Sheba, the Night and the Moon by Eric Robertson, 1913
