Cowane's Hospital - FURTHER INFORMATION
Cowane's Hospital - Stirling visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Cowane's Hospital' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Stirlingshire.
Cowane's Hospital was built between 1637 and 1649 using funds left by John Cowane (aka Auld Staney Breeks), a wealthy businessman from Stirling. There is a statue of John Cowane (known as Staneybreeks) above the entrance to the building. The hospital stands between the Church of the Holy Rude and the Old Town Jail near to Stirling Castle in the Old Town. It is one of the tourist attractions of Stirling, with free entrance and disabled access.
Cowane's Hospital was built as an almshouse for 13 elderly Guild members, who did not enjoy staying here due to the strict rules applied to residents. For many years Cowane's Hospital was also used as the Guildhall where merchants would meet to discuss business and fix prices. It was also used as a school and, during times of epidemics, a hospital. Today it is used concerts, meetings and ceilidhs.
