Arouca is a small town in the Beira Litoral region of Portugal. Arouca was founded in the 10th century, though many of the buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Within the town is an old convent church whose choir stalls date from 1725 and organ from 1739. On the first floor is a museum with some fine examples of Portuguese religious art.
Arouca is close to the Freita mountain range (Serra da Freita), popular for walking and hiking with peaks like Monte Calvo. Near to Arouca, in Mizarela, is the Frecha da Mizarela waterfall.
Arouca also refers to the Municipal area of Arouca, which contains 20 villages. Within the area is an important archaeological site, Săo Joăo de Valinhas. The region contains many important geological sites and is a member of both the European Geoparks Network and Global Geoparks Network.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Arouca lies 41km west of Santa Maria da Feira (N227 then N224) and 65km souteast of Porto (A1 to Santa maria da Feira and then as above).
