Satara is a the principle town in the Satara district of Maharashtra state in India. It is named after the seven (sat) hills (tara) that surround the town, built at the confluence of the Krishna and Venna Rivers, about 67 miles south of Pune.
Satara contains the Shahu Stadium cricket stadium, which attracts many visitors. There are numerous hotels and hostels around the town and Shri Bhavani Museum. Local attractions within the town include the numerous temples like Ganesha Temple, Shri Hanuman Temple, Bhairanath Mandir, Shri Krishna Mandir and Phodjai Devi Mandir.
In the surrounding are many historic sites worth visiting. Among these are Chandan (Wandan) Fort, Ajainkyatara Fort, Sajjangad and Yavateshwar. Nearby is the Yamai Devi temple, which contains life-sized marble idols of avatars of Lord Vishnu and a 200 feet high deepmala.
A little to the northeast of Satara is Pachgani, a hill station surrounded by five hills on top of a volcanic plateau. It is renown for breathtaking valleys, winding rivers, scenic mountains and scattered hamlets and attracts many tourists throughout the year. Just to the west of Pachgani is Mahabaleshwar, also renown for scenic beauty and home to the 'Queen of Hill Stations', a popular honeymoon location, and Mahabaleshwar Temple.
Just west of Satara is the Thoseghar Waterfall, which cascades over 100m into a deep ravine. It is popular with hikers and picnickers.

Road: Satara is 120km south of Pune (NH4 road) and 220km west of Sholapur and 260km south of Mumbai.
