The Mercat Cross was once the focus of trading in Stirling. Standing on Broad Street, in the heart of the Old Town, it was where the merchants met to discuss business and make deals. It is close to Stiling Castle and the Church of the Holy Rude. Many wealthy merchants built their houses around the Mercat Cross during the 15th and 16th Centuries when the Stuarts held court here. Nearby is Norrie's House, which belonged to Town Clerk, James Norrie.
The Tollbooth was built next to the Mercat Cross in the mid 15th century. It contained the court house, council rooms, armory and prison and town vault. The original Tollbooth was demolished around 1700 and rebuilt between 1703-5, designed by Sir William Bruce who also designed Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh. Today the Tolbooth houses the Stirling Council's Heritage & Cultural Services and is a centre for music and the arts with seating for up to 200 people, meeting rooms, rehearsal space, a recording studio, bar and restaurant.
