Ord (An t-Ord) is a small settlement at the mouth of the River Ord on the shores of Loch Eishort on the Sleat Peninsula of Skye. There is a sandy beach here, one of only a few found on Skye, and a slipway for boats. It is home to Ord House, and award winning Bed and Breakfast, as well as other B&B and self catering places for visitors. On the far side of the water is Strathaird Peninsula.
The drive to Ord is stunning, weather you cross over the Sleat Peninsula from Teangue or have driven along the coast from Tarskavaig past Torr Gauscavaig. Near Ord you will find the Coille Togabhaig National Nature Reserve where otters, red deer and golden eagles are regularly seen. There are also the historic ruins of St Comgan's Chapel, built in the 700's, to the north and Dunscaith Castle a mile south of the village. It is a popular base for walking holidays, with the Cuillin Hills a short distance away.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Ferry: From Mallaig to Aramadale and then drive.
Road: There are two routes across the Sleat Peninsula. The most popular follows the Ord River valley from the A851 north of Teangue. The other leaves the A851 at Kilbeg and winds over various hills to Tarskavaig and then continues up the coast. Ord is about 10 miles from Aramadale and 21 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh via the Skye Bridge and Broadford (16 miles).
