Dean from Dean Bridge - FURTHER INFORMATION
Dean from Dean Bridge - Edinburgh visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Dean from Dean Bridge' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Lothian.
Dean Bridge crosses over the Water of Leith above Dean, the historic millers quarter of Edinburgh. Run by the 'Incorporation of Baxters' (Bakers Guild), Dean at one time had 11 mills providing meal for the city and surrounding villages. Established in the 12 century, there are several historical buildings and artifacts of that past era scattered around the district.
Dean Bridge was built in 1832. At the southern end of Dean Bridge stands Kirkbrae House, an odd-shaped building used as a tavern by the Baxters in the 17th century. At the other end stands Holy Trinity Church which was built in 1838. Along the river lie Wells Court (1884) and Hawthorn Buildings (1895). Along Millers Lane is a small park containing a collection of the ancient mill stones. Various other ancient building panels can be found on Bell's Brae.
Other attractions around Dean include the Dean Gallery, Dean Cemetery and Dean Park.
