The London Peace Pagoda stands overlooking the River Thames in Battersea Park, about half way along the Thames Path between Albert Bridge and Chelsea Bridge. Like all such Peace Pagoda's around the world, it is a Buddhist stupa built as a focus for people of all races and creeds, to inspire unity in the search for world peace. The Peace Pagoda in London was built in 1985. Every morning a monk performs various rituals at the pagoda at sunrise. It is now a well known landmark and popular attraction within the park.
There are around 80 peace pagodas around the world, and most were built by Nichidatsu Fujii (1885-1985), a Buddhist monk from Japan who founded the Nipponzan-Myōhōji Buddhist Order. More about them can be found in this Wikipedia article
The story of the London Pagoda originates from Milton Keynes in the 1970's when one of the town planners saw a Peace Pagoda in Sri Lanka. He proposed the idea to Milton Keynes who took it up and installed one. Subsequently, when the GLC was looking for ideas to celebrate the Year of Peace a tape recording the opening of the Milton Keynes Peace Pagoda was handed over and they selected this site for one in London.
