Hurlingham Park lies close to Putney Bridge and South Park in south-west London. The park opened in 1879 and had a stadium capable of seating 2,500 people. It was a popular venue for rugby and football. The stadium was removed in 2002 and replaced by a large pavilion with an athletics track.
Hurlingham Park today has various sports facilities such as an athletics track, bowling green, football pitches, netball courts, putting green, rugby pitches and tennis courts. In addition there is a children's playground and a small formal garden.
Hurlingham Park achieved fame as the filming location of Monty Python's 'The 127th Upper Class Twit of the Year Competition from Hurlingham Park' sketch in 1969.
South of the public park is Hurlingham Club, a private members club next to a polo ground. Hurlingham is widely considered the home of Polo, which was first played here in 1874. In 2008 it and hosted the Polo World Series.
