Brompton Cemetery is a large cemetery near Earls Court in London. The cemetery opened in 1840 when it was called the 'West of London and Westminster Cemetery'. It is one of seven cemeteries opened in London during the mid 19th century to alleviate the burial demands being made on parish churches in the growing city. The site covers 39-acre (16 hectare) and contains about 35,000 gravestones and monuments.
Brompton Cemetery was designed by Benjamin Baud. At the southern end is a domed basilica chapel, built in 1839 and based on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. This is approached along a long colonnade flanked on either side by catacombs, and the whole site is laid out like a large open air cathedral.
Brompton Cemetery is managed by The Royal Parks, and is a Grade II* listed site in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England with several individually listed monuments. Many of the names of BBeatrix Potter's animal characters come from the various gravestones here and the cemetery has featured in several films.
