Fornells (Fournella) is a small village in set on the western side of Fornells Bay, about half way along the north side of Menorca. Fornells developed during the 16th century around a castle built on the hill to protect Fornells Bay from Barbary pirates. Most of the castle was destroyed during the 18th century, but the watchtower still remains on top of a hill overlooking the bay, with great panoramic views over the surrounding area. In 1798 it was the landing site for the British invasion of Menorca.
Fornells Bay is 5km long and 2km wide. The area and village depend mainly on fishing and water sports. The bay is often full of boats, especially the traditional 'llauts' lobster fishing boats. Fornells has escaped major hotel and resort development.
